July's Quiet Day was led by Rachel Carr and explored the call of Peter. Our thanks go to Rachel, as well as to John Fells and Fiona McCullough for their hospitality. A poem by Pauline Swinden and photos by Rev Olivia Coles give a flavour of the morning.
When we arrived that morning in the air there was a chill
But there was such tranquillity, it gave us such a thrill.
Meeting with friends both old and new, we had some time to chat
And hear a little tale about the purring of a cat.
There is time for much reflection as we study Peter’s call
His desire to follow Jesus, whom he hardly knew at all.
When told to cast his net he thought ‘Well that will do no good’
But he obeyed, so what was it that made him think he should?
And when the fish began to come he could not understand
He had to call upon his friends to give a helping hand
In fear he cried out to the Lord to make Him go away
But Jesus simply smiled at him, he knew that He would stay.
‘Don’t be afraid’ was what He said ‘for you will do much more’
He turned and pointed to the crowd upon the distant shore
These are the ones that you will catch, and many more besides
You will not need to use a boat or watch for changing tides
Well Peter was still mystified, but he turned and followed after
Continuing to watch and serve whilst learning from his master
We thought things over quietly and then went home to sleep
To wonder at the mysteries that happened in the deep.
